NoMachine NX allows Norwegian research organization access to Linux resources and applications from Windows machines.
About the Company
Norsk Regnesentral (NR), a private, non-profit technical and industrial research institute, carries out 25 percent of Norway's research in the areas of information/communication technology and applied statistical modeling. Their clients who perform and use this research include a broad range of industrial, commercial, and public service organizations in national and international markets. Research projects yield results like reports, software, prototypes, and short courses that serve as resources for all types of industries. For example, in the 1960s NR started the first object-oriented programming language, Simula, used in a wide range of computer applications for type setting, computer graphics, and education.
The Challenge
NR researchers, who range from economists to physicians, needed a remote access solution that would give them access to both Windows and Linux applications. Because the research they do is often time-consuming, and the programs and applications need to run longer than the length of a normal workday, they needed the capability of disconnecting their sessions in the evenings and resuming them in the mornings. In addition, NR needed a remote access solution that would run applications in real-time with high session reliability, even on low bandwidth.
The Solution
Norsk Regnesentral ultimately chose NoMachine NX Enterprise Server as their remote access solution. A fully-featured Unix terminal server and desktop consolidation tool, NX Enterprise Server connects to XDMCP servers, Windows Terminal Services, and Citrix MetaFrame, and automatically supports all Windows, Linux, Solaris, and Macintosh applications.
Furthermore, the NX Client provides a user-friendly GUI and quick connection that allows NR researchers to easily access Windows applications. With NX's unique display protocol that provides faster data transmission than other remote access solutions, users are able to access data-heavy development and statistical analysis tools in real-time even on a low bandwidth connection. NX also provides a disconnect and resume feature that allows users to run long programs outside of the workday, completing research much more quickly. With NX, it is now easier for NR to restart a Windows PC to get the latest security updates, while the work continues to run on Linux, preventing delays and loss of data collection.
Results
Performing research in the Linux environment from a Windows machine was made easy for NR with NoMachine NX. The high performance with Windows XP, even when using low bandwidth, and the disconnect/resume feature has allowed users to get bigger research projects finished more quickly.
"We have had smooth sailing remote access to the Linux environment from Windows machines with NoMachine NX," says NR's John Enok Vollestad. "There has been less work and more fun with NX than with previous products. The disconnect/resume feature has been a major advantage for us allowing our users to finish intense research in half the time."
