The Challenge |
S3 was facing problems with their current remote x sessions via VNC over a limited bandwidth link. Challenges including slow speed, lack of session reliability, and no reconnection feature combined to make it difficult for S3 to work remotely in real-time. Also, the engineering group needed session sharing for their remote presentations and meetings.
They searched for the perfect solution to solve these problems, one that would provide them with the features they needed or complete, real-time mobile connectivity. But it was difficult to find. S3's IT/System Administrator, Ondrej Valousek, says "We encountered some challenges in our search. Microsoft's Windows Terminal Server only works with Windows; Citrix licensing costs too much and has poor Unix server knowledge and support; VNC is too slow; and X-Win 32 performs well, but is only for Windows clients."
What S3 needed was a high-performance remote access solution for their Unix servers that would support all platforms (from Windows to Linux), provide cost-effective licensing, consistently generate the high speed and performance they needed to work in real-time, and provide industry-standard security. |

The Solution |
S3 chose NoMachine NX as their remote application delivery solution because it provided solutions to all of these problems. NX offered:
Support for both Windows and Linux. The NX Enterprise Server is a fully-featured Unix terminal server and desktop consolidation tool with a Client that supports Windows, Linux, Solaris, and Macintosh desktops and applications. Speed. S3 needed a remote access solution that would provide optimized X performance. With a protocol based on X, NX was able to work at optimal speed even within S3's low bandwidth environment. With its unique display protocol and smart-caching mechanisms, NX creates a much faster, real-time remote access connection than other popular solutions. Resume/Disconnect Feature. NX's Resume-Disconnect feature enables users to suspend a running session and resume it later from a different location. In other words, an S3 engineer can leave a session running in the Czech Republic and pick up it up in San Jose. XRANDR Support. NX supports S3's use of XRANDR which allows clients to resize x screens (session screens) on the fly. Session Sharing and Shadowing Capabilities. NX enables S3 employees to view and share a session or presentation simultaneously, enabling S3 to hold worldwide meetings for their geographically dispersed team. |

Results |
S3 has now deployed three NX Enterprise Servers worldwide in Prague, Dublin, and Cork, giving their employees the ability to connect to these servers via NX and access their RHEL 4.0 or 5.0 desktops and silicon simulator applications from any location, even over a limited bandwidth link.
Valousek says, "NX has met all of our expectations with its high-speed performance and constantly growing features allowing for more flexible use. It is more affordable than other remote access solutions and provides tools for us to use it the way we need to. With the advanced technology of NX, we are able to do things that are not possible with other remote access providers." |
