First Maintenance Release of the NX 3.2.0 Server and Node Packages

2008-05-27  by: Silvia Regis

ROME, Italy, May 27, 2008 - NoMachine makes available the first maintenance release of NX Server and NX Node 3.2.0. These new versions provide fixes for a number of issues such as:

  • NX server doesn't check the exit code when executing custom scripts and allows the session to be started even when the script has failed.

  • In fullscreen mode Gnome panels may stay on top of the NX session window when running a session with Compiz enabled.

  • In shadow sessions the shadowers keyboard layout may be wrong when shadower and shadowee have different language layouts for their keyboards.

  • The X11 agent minimizes to icon if it loses the focus when running fullscreen and the mouse pointer meets the screen boundary.

Installation

Installation of NX Server for Linux requires the download and installation of three packages: client, node and server. The client is needed because it ships libraries used by the node. The node is needed because it ships tools needed by the server. Furthermore, the SSH server daemon (SSHD) needs to be up and running on each of the NX Node machines since NX relies on the mechanism provided by the SSH subsystem for handling user authentication.

Installation instructions for Linux and Solaris SPARC platforms use the sudo utility. If you don't have it installed, log on as superuser ("root") and run the commands without sudo.

RPM version for Linux
  • Download the RPMs
  • Change your working directory to the location where you saved the package and install it by running from a console:

    # sudo rpm -i nxclient-3.2.0-xy.i386.rpm
    # sudo rpm -i nxnode-3.2.0-xy.i386.rpm
    # sudo rpm -i nxserver-3.2.0-xy.i386.rpm

DEB version for Linux
  • Download the DEBs
  • Change your working directory to the location where you saved the package and install it by running from a console:

    # sudo dpkg -i nxclient_3.2.0-xy_i386.deb
    # sudo dpkg -i nxnode_3.2.0-xy_i386.deb
    # sudo dpkg -i nxserver_3.2.0-xy_i386.deb

TAR.GZ version for Linux
  • Download the TAR.GZs in the /usr directory
  • Change your working directory to the location where you saved the package and install it by running from a console:

    # cd /usr
    # sudo tar zxvf nxclient-3.2.0-xy.i386.tar.gz
    # sudo tar zxvf nxnode-3.2.0-xy.i386.tar.gz
    # sudo tar zxvf nxserver-3.2.0-xy.i386.tar.gz

  • Run the setup script for installing the NX Node and NX Server software:

    # sudo /usr/NX/bin/nxnode --install
    # sudo /usr/NX/bin/nxserver --install

SPARC.GZ version for Solaris
  • Download the SPARC.GZs
  • Change your working directory to the location where you saved the package and install it by running from a console:

    # sudo gunzip nxclient-3.2.0-xy.sparc.gz
    # sudo pkgadd -d nxclient-3.2.0-xy.sparc
    # sudo gunzip nxnode-3.2.0-xy.sparc.gz
    # sudo pkgadd -d nxnode-3.2.0-xy.sparc
    # sudo gunzip nxserver-3.2.0-xy.sparc.gz
    # sudo pkgadd -d nxserver-3.2.0-xy.sparc

Technology Brief
Data encryption and security

NX security is guaranteed at every layer involved in the communication process. NX uses SSH public-key encryption and 128 bit volatile random cookie generation.

Multimedia support

NX transparently tunnels Linux multimedia channels. Not only does NX play KDE and Gnome system sounds, but you can listen to MP3s played on the server and local workstation simultaneously.

Unified support for all major remote desktop protocols

Thanks to its outstanding compression performances, NX is able to deliver X, RDP and RFB remote sessions using the same client. This is achieved by translating "foreign" protocols into X-Window, the native protocol of NX.
