Supporting Unity 3D and GNOME 3 in NX virtual sessions
Unity (3D), the desktop manager for Ubuntu, became the default desktop with Ubuntu version 11.04.

Designed to work with real 3D hardware, it uses the OpenGL library to send
graphics commands directly to the video adapter, where data is rendered and shown on the physical display. If no 3D-capable graphic card is available, Ubuntu provides Unity 2D as a fallback. Unity 2D is fully supported by NX.

With regards to supporting Unity 3D instead, the main problem is that an NX virtual session will not run on a physical display.  This means that no workarounds are possible to eliminate the problem.

Research and development is necessary to find a technology able to solve this show-stopper. A possible solution to be evaluated and experimented is an emulation software to render graphic commands on a hidden virtual display. Or, another option is sending graphics commands over the network to render them on client hardware.

A similar issue is also preventing NX from supporting GNOME 3, the new
Fedora default desktop
